How do jokers work in American Mah Jongg?

Jokers are the wild cards of American Mah Jongg, and they are one of the biggest features that sets it apart. Each set has eight of them. A joker can stand in for any tile inside a group of three or more matching tiles, so if a hand needs three green dragons and you only have two, a joker completes the set.

There are two firm limits. A joker cannot be used in a pair or a single tile, and jokers cannot be passed during the Charleston (the opening tile exchange). A nice bonus rule: if another player has a joker exposed on their rack, you can swap it out by giving them the real tile it is standing in for. Jokers can't be passed, but they can absolutely be stolen, which is exactly the kind of drama that keeps a table laughing.

How do you actually play a hand?

Here is the flow of a single game, start to finish, in beginner-friendly steps.

Step 1: Build the wall. Everyone mixes the tiles face down and builds a wall in front of their rack, nineteen tiles long and two tiles high. Players then deal tiles until each person has thirteen (the dealer starts with fourteen).

Step 2: Do the Charleston. The Charleston is a set of passes at the start of the game where players hand three unwanted tiles to each other. It gives everyone a chance to trade away junk and shape their hand toward something on the card. Remember, jokers cannot be passed during the Charleston.

Step 3: Pick a hand from the card. Look at the National Mah Jongg League card and aim for the hand you are closest to. You do not have to decide forever, but having a target keeps every draw meaningful.

Step 4: Draw, discard, and call. On your turn you draw a tile and discard one, working toward your chosen hand. When a player discards a tile you need, you can call it, but only if that tile completes an exposure you are building toward your winning hand.

Step 5: Declare Mah Jongg. The moment your tiles exactly match a hand on the card, you call "Mah Jongg" and win the round. That is the whole loop, and it goes faster every time you play.

American vs Chinese mahjong: what is different?

They share the same beautiful tiles and the same name, but American and Chinese mahjong play quite differently. The short version: American mahjong uses a yearly card of set hands and adds jokers, while Chinese mahjong lets players build hands freely and uses no jokers at all.
